There are a lot of people who don’t know how to do stuff. I am talking about every day life skills that help your life run smoothly and easily.
Maybe they weren’t taught. It could be that they don’t have enough experience with doing new things that they don’t have context to figure it out. Sometimes it has to do with fear. Maybe someone just did everything for them. Whatever the reason, they just don’t know how to do things. If you are one of those people, this article is for you!
Before I go on, let me reassure you that there are a lot of people like you. We’re all ignorant about far more things than the things we have knowledge of. For example, I am completely ignorant when it comes to hermit crabs, weather patterns, the history of fashion, medieval justice, and thousands of other things. Ignorance isn’t a bad thing. It’s just a state of not knowing or being informed. You can correct ignorance easily by gaining information.
Fortunately we live in the internet age. Just about everything you could ever want to know is available online. Here is a list of links that can help you see what type of information is available online. Some are video links. Some are articles.
How to open a bank account.
How to write a will.
How to get a Virginia driver’s license.
How to apply for a passport.
How to pay bills online.
How to create a budget.
How to turn on utilities.
How to apply for food stamps.
How to file for custody.
How to do laundry.
How to cook eggs.
How to go grocery shopping.
How to coordinate an outfit.
How to interview for a job.
How to write a resume.
So you see, just about anything you want to know can not only be found on the internet, you will get thousands of answers to the same questions. Some will be more detailed, some less. Some will be understandable, some will be in language such technical language that you won’t know what they are talking about. Information is available in words, with pictures, and video. So there is really no reason to remain ignorant about anything – especially simple life skills.
The best thing about learning how to do stuff is that it teaches you how to be self reliant. When you can count on yourself for getting through the day, tough times, and crises, you become more confident that no matter what happens, you are going to be okay. It becomes okay for others to rely on you and ask for your help. That also builds self esteem.
Also the more capable of, the more daring you become. You learn that you can succeed. You lose your fear of trying. Fear doesn’t plague you anymore so life is much more fulfilling. Everything you learn gives you context that makes the next question easier to solve. So give it a whirl. Do something you didn’t know how to do before. Then do another, and another. See how far you can go when you overcome ignorance.
